Task

We were tasked to create a "playful" design output or prototype that is shaped by current design trends and emerging creative technology.

On week 2, we had a change of plans where we were all invited to participate in the 'Taiwan International Student Design Competition'. This year's theme is 'Equality' with the 17 goals established by the '2030 Sustainable Development Goals' and a theme that visualizes Taiwan. This competition is split into 3 categories: Product Design, Visual Design and Digital Animation.
I decided to create a short animation film along with a poster for my film with the help of one of my friend because I have always wanted to feel how is it like to create a short film, however with the time limit

I made a proposal about using 'Gender Inequality' as a base while adding playful elements such as funny character expressions and more to fulfill my assignment's criteria.

Unfortunately, I turned my proposal slides into my final presentation and did not save the initial proposal slides, so the slides below has everything included from my initial proposal to the final presentation slides.

In the middle of the semester, Ms Anis allowed us to disregard the Taiwan theme to broaden our ideas, this decision was also made to ease our workload of researching assets or culture to represent Taiwan.

After multiple revisions of the script and a green light from Ms Anis, I proceeded to start with the character design with the help of my friend.

Ms Anis then gave me feedback for the character design, mainly about the colour harmony of the characters. Next, the remaining weeks were just about animating and refining the animatic before presenting the final product to Ms Anis.

Reflection

I really over-estimated the time needed to create an animatic; Also due to miscommunications, the consistency was also affected. However, I'm grateful to experience a small taste of animation, a technique I've always wanted to try.
