Project 1

We were tasked to make a proposal of ideas, backed up with research and create a final product that reflects our understanding and interpretation of Visualism - Visual Culture.

After some feedback, we tried to make our research questions and generally, everything more specific so it would make gathering information much easier.

Data Collection Day 1

We arrived in Japan. This was my first time travelling independently to overseas so there was no doubt I was excited to experience this trip. However, nothing much really happened on Day1... We landed in Haneda Airport at around 11pm and went to settle down in our hotels and were told that curfews are at 12am, but being the rebellious kid I am, me and my friends explored the area around our hotel for hours. >:D (Totally did not regret the backlash tomorrow). Me and my groupmates arrived at the hotel later to plan our agendas for tomorrow and the following days.

Data Collection Day 2

I woke up to the first morning sky in I've seen in Japan at 9am and started our data collection journey with my groupmates. First off, we went to Sensoji Temple as our first destination.

We roamed around the marketplace looking for one of our data collection objective - Omamori! We found the main temple and there were stalls beside it, selling Omamoris with various colours and patterns. We also went to get some Omikuji (fortune paper) for fun and that made my day.

In the evening, we went to our next data collection site, The Oji Fox Parade Shrine. However, something looks off... For a "Fox" Shrine, there were ironically no fox statues in our sights.

Oh... This is a regular Oji Shrine without foxes. We went to the wrong shrine, so much for being a great tour guide. Luckily, the Oji Fox Parade Shrine was only a block away. But, it was closed (9pm). We travelled miles to visit a closed shrine, only to cheer ourselves up with a hot bowl of ramen to end the day. :(

Data Collection Day 3

We headed to TeamLabs Tokyo for some visually stunning and interactive experience. There were flooded rooms, river-looking hallways, bouncy ball-filled rooms and many more crazy stuff. It was refreshing that we did not need to worry about our data collection while in TeamLabs, the scenery and rooms are also mesmerizing, you would wish to stay there and just admire the beauty of each room.

After that, we went to the Diver City Mall for some refreshments. There was a large-scaled Unicorn Gundam statue in front of the mall to promote a big Gundam-only store in the mall. It was probably the arcades and the gundam store that kept us in the mall for the whole day, that we forgot about our data collection task.

Data Collection Day 4

We visited 2 museums, the 21/21 Design Sight Museum and the Mori Art Museum until afternoon.

That was where we left off to our next data collection site - Toyokawa Inari Betsuin, an Inari shrine in Minato City. We took pictures of the Inari statues and tried to understand every descriptions written on the shrines with Google Translate.

Data Collection Day 5

Our final data collection site is a Yokai Museum all the way at Chofu. It features an author's work of different youkais, it was even made into an animation series! We took pictures of different youkais and its description, and planned on what can we do with these information.

To end the day, we went to Akihabara explore, but we missed a stop and decided to take a detour, we arrived minutes before every shops in Akihabara closes, so we planned to revisit Akihabara tomorrow.

Data Collection Day 6

On our final day, we went to Akihabara and Shibuya, bought many souvenirs and enjoy ourselves since we've done all our data collection.

Compilation for presentation

We had one day to compile everything we got on a google slides presentation for feedback. We met up with Ms Anis and Mr Azrizal for our presentation and they agreed with the Omamori idea. Ms Anis suggested that we design an Omamori based on Taylors' superstitions.

Final presentation

We had one day to compile every information we had into a poster. Lee Ren, Fadhil and Nurul were in charge of making the poster while Glen, Enya and I were in charge of designing the omamoris.
