Task 3

Type Exploration & Application

Lecture

Week 2 - Typographic Composition

Rule of Thirds- composition divided into 3x3 frames whereas the intersecting lines were used to place the point of interest. Not widely used as there are more favorable options.

Environmental Grid- composition where several structures were combined into a superstructure
Figure 1.1, Environmental Grid, 5 Oct 2022

Form and movement- based on an existing grid system, it is used to explore the options that the gird offers; to dispel the seriousness surrounding the application of the grid system

Week 3 - Context and Creativity

Handwriting- It is important because the first mechanically produced letterforms were designed to directly imitate handwriting.

Week 4 - Designing Type

Process of Type Designing:

  1. Research- Understand the history, anatomy and conventions of the type before creating it.
  2. Sketching- Could use traditional mediums like brushes, ink and pen etc. for better control (self-preference) then digitalize it or use digital mediums like the Wacom tablet as it is easier but might lack natural hand strokes.
  3. Digitalization- Export font into a font digitalization software such as FontLab or Glyphs app.
  4. Testing- Important process when type designing. Keep refining and correcting aspects of the typeface and create prototypes to test them. Typeface needs to be readable and legible before deploying unless it is a display type.
  5. Deploy!
Week 5 - Perception and Organisation

Contrast- Provides a point of interest that attracts the readers focal point to that desired location.
Figure 1.9, Contrast, 5 Oct 2022

Form- Used to represent a concept or to do it as a visual.

Organization- Gestalt Theory.

Exploration

Task 3: Type Exploration and Application

Idea Proposal

I started off with some ideas of what fonts i could create. the first idea was to combine medieval fonts and sci-fi/futuristic fonts together. My concept was to use these fonts in a game where technology took over an old medieval town they created their own font.
Figure 2.1, Idea 1, 27 Oct 2022

My second idea is to use the strokes(bi hua笔画)to create a poster for Chinese New Year.
Figure 2.2, Idea 2, 27 Oct 2022

After some feedback, I do not really want to continue with the 2 ideas that I've proposed. That is when my friend showed me this poster. It was from a promotional music video for a first-person shooter game Valorant. I was interested with recreating the entire alphabet for this font and went with it. I could use the fonts to create splash arts and online tournament posters for Valorant.

Figure 2.3, Idea 3, 10 Nov 2022

First off, I started creating each alphabet in Adobe Illustrator with several sketches for each alphabet, and I also tested how my font would look before exporting it to FontLab8 for further refinement.

Uppercase

Figure 2.5, Sketches of uppercase letters, 13 Nov 2022

Lowercase

Onto the lowercase letters! As there are no references for any lowercase letters of this font, i slightly struggled to create them and made them identical to their uppercase counterparts. The first attempt DOES NOT resemble their uppercase counterparts, which is bad :')
Figure 2.6, attempts on lowercase letters, 13 Nov 2022

After several attempts, I've finished my lowercase fonts along with numbers and symbols, and placed them side-by-side to see if they look identical.

Exporting into FontLab

Started exporting everything into FontLab8 to create the font file.

Started kerning each letter

These are the sample fonts I made while kerning them.

Found some templates I can start off with.

Made a clean template for my font.

I stumbled upon this font where there are some opaque patterns in the font and would like to implement this into my font.

I noticed the fonts were too dark, so i played around with curves in Photoshop, then re-exported them back into Illustrator.

I also did more posters with the font included.

Feedback

Week 12:
General Feedback: Can write this is a typeface designed for online game tournaments
Make a fictional online tournament poster Start working on application Week 11:
General Feedback: Still have lots of work to do, finish it faster
Specific Feedback: Stem of Y could mimic X's Stem of the Z is too "aggressive". Remove protruded area of the hairline of Z. Make upper part shorter as the hairline is always shorter, and make the base wider. (Z)
Week 10:
General Feedback: Don't make too much counterspace in an alphabet Specific Feedback: G is too wide, too much counterspace Go for the 2nd E, which looks better Week 9:
General Feedback: Medieval + Futuristic font: they are completely different. Medieval- very characteristic Futuristic- very simplified. Will be challenging.
Chinese-themed font: Many people tried, must make it stand out than the rest.
Specific Feedback: Chinese-themed "Latin" font: If can create something equally                 as revolting as that, that would be great.

Reflection

Experience    - It turned out pretty well. I might even use my font when creating a poster for my friend as he had organized Valorant tournaments before. However, the time it takes to adjust and kern every letter is just mentally painful, but I enjoyed the process and the assignment itself as I get to choose what I wanted to make (free-titled).

Observation  - I realized how hard is was to balance counterspace and aesthetics. Some of my letters looked pretty good in my opinion when they were alone, but created a lot of counterspace when placed with other letters in a sentence, making it look weird.

Finding          - Fonts are HARD to make! Precision and consistency is needed to make a functioning and appealing font, but it was hard to balance them in my opinion. Some letters looked nice, but once compared to other letters, they looked too thin/ too short, etc. I felt like I could make my font more consistent if I had better planning on time management as the end of the semester is usually the busiest.
