Project 4 / Self-Titled

Instructions

Mr. Faez briefed us about our final task, "Self-titled". He also taught us the basics of After Effects to assist us in our work.

Exploration

Poster

I started off the composition by adding a suit of armour onto myself, a menacing-looking mannequin and a fantasy beast.

Then, I added some maple leaves swirling around into a book because the top looks a little empty. The leaves represents "the journey" recording into "my story"(the book).
Figure2.2

After some thoughts, I felt like a darker background is better as it shows more contrast, therefore I created additional thumbnails with different backgrounds to see which composition fits best...

...and I decided to go with the first one.

Figure2.4

After some feedback, I was suggested the to change the lighting to glow from the book, and so I refined it.

Animation

This process would be easier thanks to the After Effects class activity Mr. Faez gave me and some self learning of the software during IVN class. I started off by making the mannequin wobble while moving up and down tho show some liveliness.

Figure3.1

Next, I added some maple leaves swirling across the artwork to look like it's blowing.

Figure3.2

Moreover, I added some blinking lights to the center piece of the armour and the beast's eye as extra details.

Figure3.3

Next, I use the Puppet Tool to make myself move. I made myself move in a way that it looks like I am "breathing".

Figure3.4

However, I forgot to animate the lights to follow the armour and the beast's eye, and so I did it.

Figure3.5

After that, I used Adobe Media Encoder to export it into a MP4 file.

Feedback

Week 12

  • Could adjust the skin colour to match the mood of the artwork, right now it doesn't fit.

Week 13

  • First thumbnail looks better, can proceed.

Reflection

In this project, I think I had a lot of fun creating this poster and the animation. The title gives us a lot of freedom to create a piece, and also the After Effects activity really helped me out in getting the hang of the basics of After Effects.
