Task 3(A)/ Type Design and Communication

Lecture

Week 8 Lecture

In this lecture, Mr. Vinod explained about how to start our Task 3(A) Assignment. He taught us how to analyze and deconstruct an alphabet on Illustrator.

Mr. Vinod also taught me how to create fonts using shapes in Illustrator and the rules of a typefont.

  • Ascender and Descender line <1000pt
  • Capital Line
  • Baseline 500pt
  • Median Line

Task

We were tasked to create a font of our own and use it for Task 3(B). The letters that will be used are:

a e t k g r i y m p n ! # , .

I've made some sketches and decided to use the first font for the final result.

I used Illustrator to deconstruct the letters first and then create my font.

Measurements:

Ascender: 815 pt
Capital height: 620 pt
Baseline: 200 pt
Descender: 0 pt

After finalizing the font, I used export each font into FontLab 7 to convert it into a font type.

I added each font into their specific place and started trying out my font. However, something weird happened, the counter in "e" was filled.

I then started using trial and errors and somehow got it back to normal. I tried joining the inner paths of the letter, then click on reverse contour.

After hours of troubleshooting, I was finally able to proceed to create more sample text.

After sampling them, I proceed to create the pdf for final submission.

Feedback

    Week 8
  • 2nd-6th sketch doesn't look good, could go with 1st.
    Week 9
  • The "e" looks more like a "Q".

Reflection

Experience
It was a butt-clenching experience as after some research, I realized how much effort it took to create a font and I also started struggling in keeping up with assignments of other subjects.
Observation
This task was a hard one to execute due to my lack of knowledge in creating fonts. In my opinion, detailed analysing, deconstructing and recreating new fonts are the hardest and time-consuming process throughout this whole task.
Findings
I'm glad that I now know the process and creating fonts and analysing how they were constructed.
