Project 3 / Visual Analysis

Lecture

Visual Analysis - A method to understand an artwork base on its visual elements, like colour, texture, line and scale.

Process of Visual Analysis: Observation, Analysis, Interpretation

Observation: Find the author's name, his/her background, when was it created, the media used, etc.

Analysis: Define the colour used, texture created, tones and mood made and what principles they are trying to use such as balance, geometric, rhythm, etc.

Interpretation: Describe the meaning the author is trying to convey in the artwork through its dynamism, tension, and perspective to name a few.

Observation
In the illustration, we can see two people playing a game of golf. We can distinguish them as male and female based on their choice of clothing. One of their cups is several times larger than the others. The only large thing that the female has in the picture is the pitch.

Analysis
There is contrast created by using colours, which emphasizes the female symbol as the colour of the pitch is nearly complementary to the cyan background. This work also gives a sense of continuity as the main focal point was at the pitch the female was standing on, then to the enormous hole, and lastly to the male.

Interpretation
This illustration is a representation of gender inequality. It conveys how easy people nowadays to achieve their goals is determined by their gender. All the way from the 1800s to the present, gender inequality always exists, how their pay is determined by their gender; how their future would be is determined by their gender; how relationships work is determined by their gender and so on.
The colour palette that the author used is Cyan as their background. Cyan is created by a mix of blue and green. Green is typically described as natural, this might tell the audience that it is almost natural to witness gender inequality in this day and age, whereas blue expresses sadness and sorrow, it shows how sad gender inequality is present anywhere in this world.

Exploration

I used an artwork as reference for each thumbnails to make sure I do not go out of topic while sketching out.

After making those thumbnails, Ms Jinchi and I agreed that the 3rd thumbnail creates the most impact. Then, I proceed with two more thumbnails to finalize.

Figure3.14, second sketch of chosen thumbnail

The first sketch looks better, but Ms Jinchi suggested that I use the 2nd sketch's pose but in the end, the first pose is much better because it shows the woman's struggling face.

I started making the lineart and fix the woman's anatomy with the Transform tool. Ms Jinchi also stated to make the woman more feminine to fit the stereotype of girls must be feminine and soft. Therefore, I slimmed down her body, removed some muscle lines and give her some cute (not really) anime girl eyes.

Then, I made the female logo on Illustrator to get its perspective right...

...and placed it back to Photoshop to trace.

I hesitated if I should just make a flat coloured-background and call it a day but that would look unfinished, so I decided to add a sunset scenario as The Sun creates a bright contrast because I wanted to guide the audience's focal point from the large subject to the "goal" sign by using lighting contrast and the woman's eye direction.

Final Outcome

Gender Inequality

Figure4.1, Final Outcome

This artwork shows how much responsibility does a woman has compared to a man. The medkit tells how woman require more healthcare as they are prone to more diseases than men, however they sometimes do not get equal treatment. The computer and other objects tell how women have to juggle a lot more things in their daily life than men, like office work, house chores and the baby if she is into motherhood. On the other hand, the man shown has a small and light-looking male symbol, walking joyfully towards the finish line, which shows how big the inequality is between men and women.

Feedback

Week 12

  • 3rd sketch looks the most impactful, proceed with that.
  • Could make them stand on a podium.
  • Could add a broom, or things that a woman do during motherhood.
  • Add a mortar board on her to look like she's a scholar while the guy is not.

Week 13

  • Make the woman look more feminine
  • Make the woman face the finish line

Reflection

In this project, I think I've effectively applied the design principles that Ms Jinchi taught. The large subject creates emphasis to show that the woman is the main subject and the Sun creates a colour contrast that helps the audience to visually guide their focal point from the woman to the man near the finish line. Overall, I like the flexibility of this topic as "Inequality" itself is a wide topic for me to explore.
