Task 1 - Exercise 2 - Emphasis and Balance

Lecture

Balance - Distribution of colours of the visual weight of object, colours, texture and space. Can be symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial. Objects, values, colors, textures or and shapes can be used in creating balance in a composition.

Symmetrical Balance- When both sides of an artwork mirrors each other, they have equal "weight" in them. Works vertically and horizontally.

Asymmetrical Balance- When both sides of an artwork does not mirror each other, but still maintain some form of equal "weight" in them. Achieved by adding different-sized objects in a way that "balances" the overall space.

Emphasis- Makes one part of an artwork dominant over the other parts, creating a focal point that your eyes travel to first.

Visual Research

Figure 1.1 An example of Symmetrical Balance

This poster is an example of symmetrical balance. This poster shows 2 men looking each other, whereas the negative spaces around their facial features created a maple leaf. This poster could also be a representation of closure, but most importantly, both sides of the poster mirrors each other, therefore I chose this poster to represent symmetrical balance.

Figure1.2 An example of Asymmetrical Balance

This poster is an example of asymmetrical balance. It composes of some characters and buildings placed around the poster, filling up the gaps from the foreground to the background, thus creating a sense of balance, even if it is not symmetrical.

Exploration

Figure2.1 Movement

This work tells a story about a mage attempting to destroy a portal. The lines are energies that were absorbed into the portal. I used the energy trails as guidance for the audience to lead their focal point onto the portal.

Figure2.2 Emphasis

This work shows a hiker managed to climb to the peak of a mountain. The tonal value contrasts are what makes the emphasis element stronger, as people tend to look at "stronger" colours than lighter ones.

Feedback

Movement- Managed to show the principles, however, make the energy look more realistic. Add colour

Emphasis- Skillful in the sense of design and understanding. Add a spotlight behind foreground mountain to enhance emphasis.

Movement

Figure3.1 Movement

I made the energy trails more obvious and some smoke to represent the energy exerting out wind out of the portal. I used Riot's cartoon-ish artstyle to create the visual effects.

Figure3.2 Riot's artstyle consists of 2D-looking but dynamic visual effects on 3D animations.

Emphasis

Figure3.3 Emphasis

After the feedback, I decided to add the sunlight directly behind the man to create a bigger contrast, and added some lens flare to enhance the visuals.

Reflection

Throughout this exercise, I enjoyed it very much as I get to explore different design principles to achieve satisfying outcomes. I also felt like I have improved in playing around with contrast by using greyscale.
